Why Success Feels Lonely: Losing Friends While Chasing Your Dreams

Hey there, fellow dream chasers!

Let’s dive into something that’s rarely talked about but is all too real: the loneliness that often accompanies success. If you’re on the path to achieving your dreams, you might have noticed that the cheers from your circle can suddenly turn into silence. I’ve experienced this firsthand, and it’s not easy, but it’s a part of the journey that many of us face.

My Journey: From Excitement to Loneliness

A year ago, I embarked on my dream of starting a business. I was filled with excitement and hope, believing that the people in my life—friends, family, colleagues—would rally around me. But as my business grew, the support I thought I had and once counted on began to fade.

Here’s the tough reality: none of the people who were there before I started my business are still in my life today. Despite making thousands of dollars in sales, only one person I knew actually bought something from me. Just one. The rest? They quietly disappeared, offering no support, not even a simple like or share on social media.

It’s frustrating, isn’t it? Seeing people you thought were your friends support strangers with no issues, while your efforts are met with indifference. It’s not like I was asking for much— but instead, I got silence. And you know what? That’s okay. Because I’ve learned that you can’t lose sleep over the four friends who didn’t buy when there are thousands of potential customers out there who will.

Why Success Can Feel So Lonely

Success can be lonely because it changes the dynamics of your relationships. When you start chasing your dreams, you begin to grow and evolve, which can make others uncomfortable. Here are some reasons why this happens:

  1. People Are Seasonal: Not everyone is meant to be in your life forever. Some friends are there to accompany you through specific phases of your life. When that phase ends, it’s okay to let them go.

  2. Your Circle Becomes a Cage: A once-supportive circle can start to feel restrictive if the people around you aren’t on the same path. Their lack of support can act as a barrier, holding you back from reaching your full potential.

  3. Unwillingness to Grow: Chasing your dreams requires stepping out of your comfort zone. Those who aren’t ready to take those risks might distance themselves, leaving you to face the challenges alone.

  4. Jealousy and Insecurity: Unfortunately, your success can trigger jealousy in others. They may struggle with their own insecurities and find it easier to withdraw than to celebrate your achievements.

The Hardest Lesson: Learning to Let Go

One of the most challenging lessons I’ve had to learn—and am still learning—is that it’s okay to let go of people who no longer support you. It’s not about cutting ties abruptly or holding grudges. It’s about recognizing when someone’s role in your life has ended and moving forward without them.

It’s painful, but holding onto relationships that don’t serve your growth will only weigh you down. Don’t lose sight of the thousands of potential customers or supporters out there over the few friends who didn’t buy from you. Your dreams deserve better.

Moving Forward: Finding Your True Support System

As you continue on your journey, you’ll begin to find your true tribe—the people who genuinely believe in you and want to see you succeed. These are the ones who will support you through actions, not just words. They’ll like, share, comment, and spread the word because they believe in your vision.

If you’ve ever felt this loneliness, know that you’re not alone. Success can be a solitary road at times, but it’s also a journey that will bring the right people into your life. Be your own biggest, loudest cheerleader. There will be nights when you cry, feel like giving up, and question everything, but those sacrifices will make sense one day.

Never give up on your dreams. Keep pushing forward, and remember that your true supporters are out there—they just haven’t found you yet, I'm still waiting too.
